A redirect file should contain reviewed mappings. Export existing redirects before importing a replacement set and preserve that export separately. Download the current sample file from Shopify’s import interface to confirm the required columns.

This fictional two-column example illustrates the structure:

Redirect from,Redirect to
/products/old-lamp,/products/new-lamp
/pages/old-shipping,/pages/shipping

Sources must represent shop addresses that no longer serve valid pages. Shopify does not override a still-valid page with an ordinary redirect entry. Reserved paths have additional restrictions.

Start with a small selection

Check one product path and one content page before importing a large set. Open the source URLs without signing in and record whether they still serve content. Then inspect each destination. A syntactically valid path may still identify the wrong product.

Redirects are managed through Shopify’s content and menu area; follow its current documentation for the import interface. Select the file, review the preview and confirm the import.

After importing, inspect both sources with the redirect checker. Confirm the destination, language and any additional hops. Open the destination and compare the product too. Keep unresolved mappings outside the import rather than sending them indiscriminately to the homepage.
