A banner disappearing after a click does not prove that analytics follows the choice. A useful test separates four situations and sets an expectation for each: which requests should the website send?
Prepare four short test runs
Use a fresh browser profile without extensions. Open its network panel before loading the page. Record the page, browser, date and analytics system. Repeat the same action in every run, such as opening a product page.
| State | What to record |
|---|---|
| No choice yet | Analytics scripts already loaded and measurement requests sent |
| Rejected | Whether new measurement requests follow |
| Accepted | Whether each agreed event appears once |
| Withdrawn | Whether later events stop and which cookies remain |
Cookies alone do not tell the full story. Matomo distinguishes tracking consent from cookie consent. Google describes how Tag Assistant can inspect default consent and subsequent updates. These technical observations do not establish the legal suitability of your configuration.
Turn an observation into a specific task
Fictional example: after rejection, the next page change still sends an analytics request. Record the actual fault: “Moving from the product page to the basket after rejection still produces a measurement request.” Add the time, expected behaviour and triggering action. Remove personal values before sharing the record.
Also repeat the visit with a stored choice. A correct first visit does not show whether the website restores a previous rejection correctly. Keep that second visit in the same record so development can reproduce it.
Repeat the same journey after the change
Retest all four states on desktop and mobile. This distinguishes a fix to one button from a repair to the integration. Check duplicate events separately using the event test record.
When the faulty integration is identified, Tracking & Consent repairs covers one existing GA4 or Matomo property, up to five events and three agreed corrections. The deliverable includes a change log and test record. It does not recreate missing historical data.
