A visitor arrives through a newsletter and then clicks a banner inside your shop. If the internal link introduces different UTM source values, it mixes the original acquisition route with an on-site action. The effect on reporting depends on the analytics system and attribution configuration.
UTM parameters describe external campaign entry points. Internal-banner analysis needs its own question: was the banner displayed, clicked or followed to the intended section?
Define a narrow event
A fictional measurement plan might contain:
Event: internal_banner_clicked
Allowed field: banner_id = summer-range
Exclude: raw link text, email, personal URL
Trigger: exactly one real click
This is a planning example, not an installed tracker. Sending the event must follow the site’s consent controls.
Inspect the banner’s actual href first. Remove internal campaign parameters deliberately while preserving necessary selection parameters and language paths. Then test the destination and browser Back behaviour.
Use non-personal data to test an externally tagged entry followed by the internal click. Separate navigation testing from event inspection. Compare the campaign source and banner event in the intended reports. The UTM naming guide supports consistent external campaign links.
